Changes for 1975 and 1976 were predictable, except that the Matador Coupe and Sedan/Wagon were separated into two distinct models, with the Sedan and Wagon taking the high end of the AMC lineup. The base six-cylinder engine was enlarged to 258 cubic inches, but lost 5 hp to 95. The 304 and 360 V-8 options also lost a little punch in this year.

AMC offered a range of engines on its first Matador, like most of its models. The smallest of the group was a 232 cubic inch (3.8L) inline-six, with a 258 (4.2L) inline-six as a one-better that was standard on the wagon. The other three engines were V8s, of 304 (5.0L), 360 (5.9L), and 401 (6.6L) displacements.

Wow, I didn't realize the Matador wagon was part of the 1973 Montgomery Ward collection. Very Broughamy. The wagon is my favorite of the 1970-78 Rebel/Matador midsizers, as they did not get the contrived Coke-bottle posterior of the four-door sedan. The 1970-73 coupes, despite getting the same fender update, looked much better with their semi.

By the time of the Matador Machine's release in 1970 as a '71 model, AMC had already had two prior successes with flashy, limited-production performance cars adapted from more sedate models in their lineup. The first, the 1969 AMC SC/Rambler, was a two-door pocket rocket based.
